500 Miles

Early evening, clouds roaming the sky
My mind's replaying
the day we said good-bye
no sweeping exits
no long farewell
no denying what I felt

I've had my supper
dishes left to soak
Out on the back porch
with coffee and a smoke
Your face is before me
your voice in my ear
And I've got to wonder
just what I'm doing here

Cause I'm 500 miles from your doorstep
500 miles down that road
I still can't believe
that I ever let you leave
There's nothing that important, now I know
And you're 500 miles down the road

Living alone now
guess I'm used to that
except for the lonely
there ain't much it lacks
I'm thinking I'd trade it
maybe give it all up
to see you sleeping sweetly
in the morning when I wake up

Cause I'm 500 miles from your doorstep
500 miles down that road
I still can't believe
that I ever let you leave
There's nothing that important, now I know
And you're 500 miles down the road
